Worked example

EXAMPLE · 45 NIGHTS

A 45-day stay, illustrative numbers

Lodging $1,350, lodging fees $100, flights $450, food $450, local transit $150 and contingency $200 add up to $2,700 total spend. Divide by 45 days and multiply by 30: $1,800 per 30 days. The $300 refundable deposit stays separate. With $550 paid upfront and the deposit due by arrival, you need $850 in hand by arrival, or $550 if the deposit is due later.

How we calculate it

  • Total spend adds lodging, lodging fees, flights, local transit, food, coworking, connectivity, other and contingency for the whole stay.
  • Cost per 30 days is total spend divided by your days, times 30. It's a normalized number so you can compare stays of different lengths.
  • A refundable deposit is money you expect back, so it's shown separately and never counted as spend.
  • Upfront amount is the part of your spend you pay before or on arrival (first rent, flights, booking fees). It can't be more than total spend.
  • Cash by arrival is the upfront amount plus the deposit when the deposit is due by arrival. Leave upfront blank and we'll mark the estimate incomplete instead of guessing.
  • Math runs at full precision. We only round when showing the numbers. Currency is a label for formatting; we don't convert anything.

How to budget for a month abroad

Start with the cost of getting there and the amount due for your stay. Then estimate the expenses you’ll repeat each week, such as groceries, local transport and coworking. Enter trip totals in one currency so you can compare stays of different lengths.

Putting the result to work

Use the 30-day equivalent to compare trips, then look at cash by arrival to see how much money needs to be available before you leave.

Should a refundable deposit go in my travel budget?

Keep it in your cash plan. A refundable deposit can tie up money for weeks even though it does not increase your expected spending.
